Managers On A Mission Donates to Relay For Life in Honor of Student Managers

Minneapolis, Minnesota, November 11, 2013— Managers On A Mission (MOAM) has donated $250 to the University of Maryland Men’s Basketball Student Managers Relay For Life team in honor of two of their student managers battling cancer.

On Saturday, April 19, 2014 the “Maryland Basketball” Relay For Life team will camp out overnight and take turns walking around the University track for 12 hours to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. Their efforts are in support of their two student managers, Zachary Lederer and Dwight Williams, who have both endured personal battles with cancer. This is a large but necessary donation for MOAM because it allows them to show the purpose of their existence, which is developing the growth of student managers through service and spirituality.

Zachary Lederer has been featured on ESPN and numerous other media outlets for his inspirational battle with cancer. After surviving surgery and treatment for the removal of a brain tumor as a child, a second tumor was discovered just months after the start of his freshman year of college and time with the University of Maryland Basketball program. He underwent surgery again and has been working on his rehabilitation since then, facing many obstacles such as seizures that have made the road to recovery challenging both mentally and physically.

Dwight Williams was first diagnosed with leukemia 3 years ago, and after a successful run of chemotherapy he was able to return to school in the fall of 2012. After only a month with the Maryland Basketball program the leukemia returned, and he was forced to drop his classes and move home to North Carolina for more chemotherapy and rehab. Dwight has been cancer free for the past few months, and after completing his current internship in Washington D.C. with ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption” he will be returning to the University of Maryland.

MOAM hopes that their donation will encourage further support of the University of Maryland Basketball program and their efforts to raise money for Zachary and Dwight, and hopefully see them reunite with their team soon.

Managers On A Mission is a volunteer-driven nonprofit organization founded by Auburn University Football Equipment Manager Drew Boe and three other former student managers Ryan Wieland (Minnesota Gophers Basketball), Chris Herkenhoff (Notre Dame Football), and Chad Atherton (Virginia Tech Football). MOAM collects money and apparel donations to support mission trips to Africa, Student Manager led service projects throughout the U.S., and to develop the future leaders of sports.
