As I finish my first week here at Rafiki Zambia, I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone by. The kids here are amazing and have made me feel so welcome. From the opening night here everyone at Rafiki has made an effort to get to know me and thank me for coming. So far, it has been an awesome experience that I hope to make the most of for the final two weeks here.
Heading into this trip, a Bible verse that had been on my mind was The Great Commission: Matthew 28:19-20. I thought it was really cool that I’m doing exactly as God would want me to do, according to His word. Going a step further, I had the opportunity to share this Bible verse in my devotion for the kids on “purpose”. It was really cool to see how much of an impact these two verses can have on so many people. God is really doing amazing things at Rafiki Zambia.
During the first week, I got the opportunity to lead “Fun” day on Thursday and share a devotion on “Purpose” on Friday. This leadership position has helped me improve my communication skills as well as my coaching skills. I was so impressed with how active the kids were in discussion and in sports. From an early age, a passion for outdoor exercise is instilled in the kids at Rafiki and is transparent every day I’m here. In my opinion, is something that is lacking in America. Kids nowadays are so wrapped up in technology that they never take the time to be a kid and go play outside with friends.
As I move in to my second week here, I want to continue to build healthy relationships with the kids, so that I will hopefully form lasting impressions on them. As I’m heading home, I want to be able to look back and know that I’ve made a difference in the lives of the Rafiki kids.
